Team 2 decided to go for lots of style points this week, and they did get them! The first night they cooked hobo meals over the fire, complete with s'mores for dessert! I was sure the dinner would not be on time, but somehow, they made it with 2 minutes to spare! Plus, you might notice Aliya cooked over the fire wearing heels and a dress under her apron. Although she looked cute, I did not give extra points for fashion.
The rest of the week, as a matter of fact, they had every meal ready on time! They also figured out that it was very easy to get the points for having "at least 2 fruits and vegetables" at every meal by simply putting out salad and fresh fruit. One night we had breakfast for dinner. Unlike when I make either pancakes or bacon, they did NOT set off the smoke alarm, prompting Gabe to award both teams with an extra 10 points for not setting off the smoke alarm all week!
One night they made a "copycat" recipe from one of favorite restaurants. Using the deep fryer, they made orange chicken and rice. It was great! Another day for lunch, we had this guy show up on the table... more style points!
The final night they grilled out. Another good meal!
No tears this week, probably due to the fact that both of the kids on the team tend to be pretty easy going anyway. But they pulled off the challenge and did great! Great job Team 2!
When we tallied up the points, it was so close, but Team 1 actually won by 3 points. (At which point, Team 2 said "It was the donuts! If we had not bought the donuts, we would have been more points under budget and won!") Life lessons all around.
The best part is that at least two of the kids decided they like meal planning and preparation better than their normal jobs around here (laundry and cleaning up after meals) so two kids volunteered to do the meals again the next week! I was not expecting that, but I am thrilled! Grocery Games is considered a success!
